This new artist is the latest to hit the EDM scene! I must say I am a huge fan of EDM, as cliche as that sounds. I love the upbeat party thump thump thumps. Robert DeLong puts his own spin on EDM by using very rare instruments such as Wii remotes and joysticks hooked up to computer machines to make unique electronic sounds! Also, have I not mentioned that he was nominated as one of MTV’s new artists to watch out for for 2013? “Global Concepts” makes me wanna have a crazy dance party filled with booze and smoke and live the peak of my youth. I remember the first time I heard it I was confused by the beginning but the beat catches up with you and gets stuck in your head so that your humming to the tune all day long. Robert DeLong has definitely made an “X marks the spot” (p.s. X is his trademark, he has a red one on his shirt all the time) on my go-to party/summer playlist for 2013!
Although its over 100 degrees in Los Angeles now, I still don’t mind listening to “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood. Simply a sensual feeling overtakes the song with the soft melodic flow of vocals and low bass. The music video shows the boys chilling, relaxed, and laid back while cruising through California. What better way to spend the day right? The video has a vintage/artsy vibe that is kicked together with a don’t care about it party vibe. Not to sound contradictory or anything…. But the Neighbourhood is definitely a band you should keep your ears peeled open for!
After a crazy, hectic, eventful day I came back to my apartment and decided to do some new music searching. Luckily, this music search brought me to one of my favorite new duo, the Birds of Chicago. Yeah, the name might not sound that appealing (especially since the Hitchcock movie “the Birds” left me with a terrifying mark of the two legged creatures) however, their smooth vocals and background instruments made my mind venture off into relaxation mode where I was pondering through thoughts of love and companionship. Ok, enough of my revelation and back to the music….. The Birds of Chicago , J.T. Nero and Allison Russell, were at SXSW this year, however I did not hear of them until just recently. Their song “I Have Heard Words” spiritually connected to me and I could relate to the lyrics being sung. Russells vocals are phenomenal and put me at ease, For some reason while listening to this song I can just imagine myself sipping an Arnold Palmer on a country side somewhere in South Carolina enjoying the simplicities of life. Their North American Roots/ American folk music will definitely be something added to my upcoming July 4th playlist!
Ok the title is semi-true, but not literally. This new acoustic indie band from Dublin, Ireland has signed with Glassnote Records and recently released their singles “The John Wayne”. When I first heard of them I must admit that I was not that interested in a foreign band. First thing that popped into my mind was accents, accents, and folk music. However, after listening to a couple of their songs I grew to love them. I was fortunate enough to see this band preform twice within the last couple of months. I went to their first American show at Masonic Lodge in LA and I also saw them at the CMJ Music Festival in NYC. No doubt that this band will get far! Their audience loved them and they tend to crack jokes in between songs as well as provide their listeners with funny American journeys they’ve had like their first time at “Astroburger” in Hollywood. The Little Green Cars have such a unique and distinct voice, especially one of their lead singers Faye O’Rourke. Her voice blew me away; the pitch, tone, smoothness that she has when she chimes into songs is so pleasant to hear. The other musicians play their instruments perfectly and I feel that music is alive yet again with new raw talent! Below is one of my favorite songs, “Them”. Make sure to listen to Faye’s unique and distinct voice that captures emotion towards the song!
(Horrible quality pic, I know. But I just had to post this pic of when I met the band in October at Electric Lady Studios!)
This eclectic new duo reminds me of MGMT. Their indie pop mixed with electro makes me want to ride with the top down through Topanga Canyon! Blondfire has been out for a while now but I had never shared my love for their music till now! This song is upbeat and something that you can joyfully sing along to! The lyrics alone remind you of youth, careless, and wreckless behavior. The fringe and mountainous terrain that is present in this video perfectly captures the targeted sound of the song! Hopefully we will be seeing them at Coachella this spring!
For all my Marie Digby or Rachael Yamagata fans, Kate Earl will rock your socks off! This L.A. based artist is new on the scene with her alternative pop rock vibe. She perfectly captures the laid back California essence and incorporates it into her music style. After signing with Downtown Records, she released her new album “Stronger” in November 2012 and is conducting a nationwide tour! As I am a fan of her type of music genre, I decided to check this new artists’ album out! When first hearing her song “Melody”, I felt like it was going to be a similar rendition to Yael Naim “New Song”. Both songs start off with a piano intro and soft melodies and vocals. However, Kate definitely makes her voice more distinct and carries on the song to her own flow. Her tone and pitch just seem to flow with the melody and it gives her listeners a carefree, relaxing, yet preppy vibe! Kate shows her love for music through her songs and lets her emotions be revealed. You can tell that the artist connects with her music, sometimes the only things in life she needs are her “melodies”.
If you’re feeling in a bit of a hardcore mood, this song will definitely make you want to rock out! I always feel that rock music is always too hardcore for me, but this song killed it with its slow intro that slowly fades into All That Remains signature beat!
I have been listening to Dada Life for years now! Ever since “Happy Violence”, I have been hooked on this Swedish duo! Dada Life is continuously rising to fame and getting more and more popular with their second hit “Kick Out the Epic Motherf***er”! After seeing them live at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas this past June, I had grown to love them even more. Not only are their songs and remixes sick, they also have the best stage presence. The amount of energy along with their champagne popping and inflatable bananas makes their listeners feel compelled to love them! No lie, they can pump up a crowd with the beats of their songs.
Some more on their crazy intense outlooks on life, #therulesofdada:
Never bring your brain to a rave.
Doing the “airpiano” on stage while looking up in the air? Never. The “heart sign” with both your hands? F**K NO.
Tickle-punch-tickle-combo. Happy Violence!
Cheating is winning.
If you’re stuck, there’s only one solution: go harder.
If you only need one word to describe a song in the studio…then it’s done!
No bananas on the rider? Then we do our two hour deep/tech house set. Everything under 118 BPM.
PLUR = Potassium Lust Unity Rage
Arriving beautiful – leaving ugly.
Beautiful music = boring music. At least today.
Never BBQ before a gig.
If you don’t want to get wet, you don’t want to have fun.
Bass don’t cry.
Changing underwear at the club is cheating. Even for the members of Dada Life.
Never bring your brain into the club.
Art should be loud as fuck.
Always kick out the epic motherfucker. Always.
Everything is free.
If this doesn’t convince you just check out one of their songs and don’t forget to download their new album “The Rules of Dada” on iTunes http://bit.ly/SL2LSA!
This new British-Canadian Hard Rock/Metal group kind of reminds me of Avenged Sevenfold, that’s why I love them! I’m personally not that into such hardcore metal music, however Liam Cormier’s voice has led me to start listening to this band more and more! This band does not include newbies to the biz: lead vocalist Liam Cormier was formerly in Cancer Bats, Matt Tuck of Bullet for My Valentine is in charge of back up vocals as well as guitar with fellow Mike Kingswood from Glamour and the Kill. Joe Copcutt, formerly in Rise to Remain, is the bassist. Jason Bowld, of Pitchshifter, plays the drums. Their debut album “Vultures” was just released earlier this month. After all the great talent listed, combining them all together makes for one great rock album! Check out one of their most popular singles below:
This new hard metal band compiled of Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam Bassist), Joseph Arthur, and Richard Stuverud is releasing their first debut album Acts on October 30th!
